How pharmacology CE hours actually work for nurses

Pharmacology CE is one of the most misunderstood requirements in nursing. For most RNs there is no separate pharmacology mandate — pharmacology hours simply count toward the general total. For APRNs with prescriptive authority, pharmacology is usually a distinct, non-negotiable subtotal.

The size of that subtotal varies widely. Some states expect a handful of hours each renewal; others front-load a larger requirement across a longer cycle. Controlled-substance prescribing content is frequently carved out as its own line item.

The practical approach: add your license to your profile, let the platform show the pharmacology subtotal for your state and license type, then pick courses that are tagged as pharmacology so the hours land in the right bucket.

One caution: a course that merely mentions medications is not automatically pharmacology CE. Look for the pharmacology designation on the certificate.
